From dodgers web-site: Why did the Dodgers recall Sellers instead of shortstop Dee Gordon?
“I wouldn’t be up to speed to that, honestly,” manager Don Mattingly said. “They kind of let me know who was coming.”
And this: Scott Van Slyke was scratched from the original lineup Monday with a recurrence of neck and shoulder stiffness, while reliever Ronald Belisario is expected to be unavailable for the series opener with Arizona because he tightened up after pitching 2 1/3 innings Sunday.
Van Slyke has been playing through worsening discomfort that originated from an attempted diving catch of Yadier Molina’s double on May 25. At the time, Van Slyke described the injury as similar to whiplash.
He missed only one start after the play and has started every game in left field since Carl Crawford strained a hamstring June 1. He homered as recently as five days ago but is hitless in his last 11 at-bats and manager Don Mattingly said he noticed Van Slyke appeared stiff while batting Sunday.
Belisario stretched with the pitchers early Monday but retreated to the trainer’s room for treatment instead of playing catch and shagging with the other pitchers. Belisario made his longest appearance Sunday since throwing three innings July 5, 2010, taking over for Matt Magill, who lasted only 3 2/3 innings. Matt Guerrier and Peter Moylan pitched Saturday and Sunday, but late-inning reliever Brandon League and Kenley Jansen have not pitched since Friday.

Mattingly has a pretty good eye. SVS always seems a bit stiff to me (I am not trying to be snarky).

My daughter said “Pueeeg” a few seconds later my 2 year old “Pueeeg”

Have I got them trained or what?

Considering the last time the D’backs played our boys….
    ….
I’m hoping that we’ll be able to title this one, “The Dodgers Strike Back!”
    ….
“May The Puig Be With You…”
    :-)

    • Anonymous

PS- I’m calling it right now….. Uribe with a big night!

  4. KT

Good 1st Clayton…now for some runs

  5. KT

    Come on Jerry

  6. KT

  7. Good first inning, coulda been more.

    Eric Stephen ‏@truebluela 8m

    Puig update: .483/.500/.966

  9. That’s why Puig should be in center field…

  10. Jack Dawkins

boy….one or 2 more starts like this and the injury rumors will start

    • KT

He’s usually a second half pitcher…that’s when he really performs

  11. KT

    Let’s get that run back

  12. Jack Dawkins

And then he uncorks that curve…..

  13. Jack Dawkins

Just noticed, Loney is up to 8 HR now.

  14. KT

    Mellis!

  15. KT

    Puig again!

  16. Maybe Miley isn’t the guy to run on but I’m real anxious to see Puig start running.

  17. Well that’s not exactly where I wanted him to run… that ball was hit right to Parra.

  18. KT

    Juanito!!

  19. KT

IBB Fed to get to Kershaw…I like it

  20. Anonymous

Boy, you rarely hear Vin openly disagree with a manager’s move, but that’s what he just did. That is, he would not have let Kershaw swing on that 2-2 pitch, if at all.

  21. Man Ellis owns Wade Miley!

  22. KT

    MEllis!!!!

  23. Anonymous

Heading into tonight’s game, Puig had batted leadoff in each of his first 7 games and had reached base in 14 of 29 plate appearances — 1 walk, 7 singles, 2 doubles and 4 homers. Yet, the only four runs he scored were on his 4 home runs.

  24. KT

    Eric Stephen ‏@truebluela 1m

That was Yasiel Puig’s first strikeout against LHP. Vs Southpaws Puig is 10-for-17 (.588) with 2 homers, 2 doubles

  25. KT

    JH jr!
    Come on Dre

  26. KT

    Come on Clayton

  27. KT

    Good Game Clayton!!

  28. Nice catch but Parra made it more theatric than it was, cute little roll at the end.

It used to be that a player was called up because he was doing well in the minors. Now it seems as if being healthy is a major criterion for the Dodgers. Recalling Sellers and his .191 batting average (now .188) nonetheless seems odd to me. Does anyone know if there were better choices? I see that even Mattingly was caught off-guard.

    • Anonymous

However, i see that Sellers was hitting .337 for Albuquerque. I hope that translates into a more successful stay with the Dodgers this time.

    • Anonymous

Its a warm body thing. Punto needs to rest now and then and Cruz is hitting .140, so there is that.

    • Anonymous

Sellers hit 337/376/489 at AAA including 345/383/455 on the road

      • Anonymous

Perhaps he is a 4-A player.

        • Anonymous

sure, just giving a reason why he was the one chosen to come up

  30. Lets get some Puigsurance in the bottom of the inning.

  31. KT

come on Mellis lead it off with a hit

  32. KT

    Mellis!

  33. KT

    Gonzo!

  34. Anonymous

Come on Puig, League (we) needs this.

  35. KT

    Come on Brute 66

  36. KT

    Puig! 3-4

  37. If only there was some speed on the bases!

  38. Need more Puigs!

  39. KT

    Come on Wild Pitch

  40. KT

    He was safe

  41. Let’s hope League makes that blown call a non issue.

  42. Either… C’mon man.

  43. KT

    Turn two to end this

  44. Good plays from Skip and Andre have kept them from scoring a run… so far… Come on League.

  45. Anonymous

Happy it wasn’t a dinger (if only to prolong the agony).

  46. Anonymous

    Donnie is calling Ned?

  47. KT

    1-2-3 DP

  48. This isn’t funny anymore.

  49. Anonymous

Well, that visit to the mound really did the trick (Acknowledged Rule 7 violation). The motto of this team should be: Don’t worry. We’ll find a way to fail. You can be sure of that. (Another acknowledged Rule 7 violation). Simply too frustrating to follow this team, which I’ve been doing for more than five decades.

  50. Anonymous

At what point does Donnie stop sending League out there?

  51. Anonymous

Maybe my least favorite game ever.

    • Anonymous

      Yeah, not liking this.

    • Anonymous

At least this season. But actually one of many unbelievable games this year, several at Kershaw’s expense.

  52. Anonymous

I blame Mattingly. The guy couldn’t find the strike zone, and Mattingly left him out there forever.

  53. Anonymous

I’m sorry, but …. That HAS to be League’s final appearance as a Dodger.

I’m sure he’s a great guy, and many feel like he’s got great ‘stuff’……
But, let’s face it…. it’s not workin’, Brandon…. we have some lovely parting gifts for you on the way out.

    • Anonymous

Rationally, you’re right, but I wouldn’t wager much that League won’t pitch again. Mattingly has demonstrated that he is slow to change course.

      • Anonymous

iirc League was extended for 2014 and 2015 at 7.5 M per by Ned

  54. Anonymous

I think it’s cumulative, but yes, this year.

  55. Anonymous

Does Bell have something on his bill?

    • Anonymous

      He’s got ‘crib notes’….
I believe they read, “Juan Uribe: All benders in the dirt”

    • Anonymous

Rosin, no? Kenley had some as well (you talking about the white stuff?)

  56. Anonymous

How long will Kasten, a man with considerable success, put up with this? We need new direction in both the GM’s and manager’s positions. I know, I know, we’ve been beset by injuries even before the season begins, but there has to be a radical change.

    • Anonymous

Agreed. I now think Donnie is as bad as Ned. Donnie might be great at managing the clubhouse, but in the last few games he’s made some strange decisions. Not pinch running for Hernandez, batting Cruz fifth, and worst of all, insisting on League closing.

  57. KT

    JUANITO!!

  58. Uribear! Please cheer us up!

  59. Anonymous

    U!

  60. KT

    lucky “white” men can’t jump

  61. Anonymous

    Kershaw deserves much better.
    We deserve better.

  62. Anonymous

Bell reminds me of Shooter the way he hangs his arm

  63. KT

    Pinch runner?

  64. KT

    Come on Skippy

  65. KT

    SKIPPY!!

  66. KT

    Come on Nicky

  67. Anonymous

    Bah!

  68. KT

    Come on MEillis

  69. Anonymous

And is there something on Bell’s bill? or is that just a nervous tic?

  70. KT

big thing batting Puig 4th this game…will it haunt us?

  71. KT

    yes it haunts us

  72. Can’t overcome League.

  73. Anonymous

It would have been easier on our psyches had we just gone down in order in the bottom of the 9th. Truly.

  74. Anonymous

Hey, ‘League’ kinda rhymes with ‘Puig’….. :-)
    ….
“Hello?…… this thing on?” (tap, tap)

  75. Anonymous

Four runs given up in the ninth. Can’t get past that.

  76. Anonymous

So over the 8th and 9th inning the Dodgers got 3 singles, a home run, a double, and one batter reach on an error. The score a grand total of one run.
And they made it look easy to do too.

  77. Anonymous

    Jon, I need you tonight!

  78. Anonymous

Go sign “The Beard”…. Brian Wilson….
    ….
Janssen, Schmanssen….. no promoting from within…. Kenley’s already been in and out of that role.

    They need a fresh face.

  79. Anonymous

I was not watching. But I see that Van Slyke was put in to run for Federowicz. Could a faster pinch runner have tried to tag on Punto’s fly to left or was it too shallow? In his nine years in the minors, Van Slyke has stolen 51 bases. In parts of two seasons in the majors, he has stolen one base.

    • Anonymous

      Isn’t Sellers around?

      • Anonymous

He struck out looking for Kershaw in the 7th.

    • Anonymous

Unlikely anyone but Dee could have made it, though the throw home wasn’t good, so…maybe?

    • Ross caught it coming in toward the infield. Van Slyke woulda been dead to rights with a good throw. As it turned out the throw was up the line about ten-fifteen feet, so if SVS could have gotten past the catcher . . .

If ifs and buts were candy and nuts we’d all have a helluva Christmas.

  80. Anonymous

Yep, I’ve seen enough. Ill just catch the Kershaw and Puig highlights the days after the games, not worth the time and headaches to watch this team live.
