Dodger Thoughts

Kershaw CLXXIV: Kershowse Encounters of the Third Kind

Rays at Dodgers, 5:05 p.m.

According to the Dodger press notes, the team’s current 36-8 run is not only the best by a Dodger team since 1953, it’s the best by any National League team since then.

It’s remarkable that three of the eight losses have come during Clayton Kershaw starts – more than any other Dodger starting pitcher – even though Kershaw has had a 1.62 ERA since the hot streak began.  The other five losses have been spread in games started by Chris Capuano (2), Stephen Fife, Ricky Nolasco and Zack Greinke.

Here is the Kershaw log during that time:

Los Angeles is 2-3 in Kershaw’s past five starts. He has a 2.00 ERA with three walks and 37 strikeouts in those five outings.

In games not started by Kershaw, the Dodgers have not lost since July 25. They have won 13 straight games not started by Kershaw.

Wow! These facts sure seem to define “counter-intuitive”!

  3. Why must we get the Sunday night game on the same day that Breaking Bad returns?!? I guess I’ll record BB and watch it after Kershaw and the boys dispatch of the Rays.

    • WBBsAs

Why do we have to suffer through blacked-out ESPN games at all?

      • I guess when you’re playing well they actually want to put you on national television. Instead of just playing Yanks/RedSox every week. Heavy weighs the crown… Walter White knows a thing or two about that.

Got this from nsxtasy on MSTI:

Per Tony Jackson at dodgerscribe.com: “Mattingly said he considers Zack Greinke to be among his stable of regular pinch hitters — EXCEPT on the day before he pitches and in some cases, the day after he pitches.”

  12. Nice play Dee! Good first half.

Hanley: We keep winning. That makes it easy to make a decision. If I had to play tomorrow, I would get here early, get treatment and go for it. (But) there are three people making this decision: the trainer and the manager, and then they see how I feel every day.

Also… Mattingly said he considers Zack Greinke to be among his stable of regular pinch hitters — EXCEPT on the day before he pitches and in some cases, the day after he pitches.

“By spiking him up, if we’re down a guy, it feels like we’re not down a guy because we can use him,” Mattingly said.

I just opened up this thread without checking the game first, saw this comment and was like “oh no, Kershaw got KO’d?!” Then I looked up the score and felt much better.

  25. I like to see that out of Dee.

They really can’t be. But they can be slowed dowm (IBB for Puig)

and that, Ladies and Gentlemen, is how you play Baseball

  30. scooplew

This is the first time since June 9, 2011, that Kershaw has scored two runs in a game.

  31. KT

    Juanito!!

  32. Earned run off Kershaw, but if not for the error he would have had a DP earlier in inning and been home free.

So, Mark Ellis with 6 is now just one HR behind Ethier.

Interesting seeing Clayton take a return throw from Ellis barehanded out of frustration with a pitch a bit ago. If this had been May or June, he’d probably have fractured a finger on his pitching hand.

But you know what? It ain’t May or June anymore.

Still, Clayton, please don’t do that.

  40. KT

  43. bluegeorge

I’m thinking of that young Bay Area Dodgers fan who told his school assembly – in that video that went viral – about how the giants winning the series was the worst day of his life. Must be a great summer for that kid.

  44. Ugh, third error for Dee.

  45. btimmer

    Dee Offerman tonight.

  46. 4d3fect

Dee Gordon, the next Henry Skrimshander?

  47. btimmer

Since 1893, the most errors in a game by a shortstop in a 9-inning game is 5. That was last done by Donie Bush in 1911.

Three shortstops have made four errors in an inning: Shorty Fuller in 1888, Ray Chapman in 1914, and Lennie Merullo in 1942.

  48. KT

    J.P. Hoornstra ‏@jphoornstra3m
That last run was unearned, so Clayton Kershaw’s ERA is at 1.88 for the season.

  49. TAFKA_Gagne55

Kershaw is at 102 pitches so with a 6 run lead, I think it’ll be another Marmol game.

  50. Put the children to bed, it’s Marmol time!

If the best you can do is .509, you ought to be 7.5 back, if not more.

  57. foul tip

Graphic about Kershaw having best ERA with 1000 innings in the modern era is all the more notable because of numbers 2 & 3 on list….Whitey Ford and Sandy Koufax.

What strikes me is that all 3 of those greats are lefties. If you put a lot of stock in lefty/righty stuff, all the more remarkable given the dominant number of right handed hitters.

Clayton Kershaw is 49-0 in his career when he gets four or more runs of support.
