Dodger Thoughts

Jon Weisman's outlet for dealing psychologically with the Los Angeles Dodgers, baseball and life

Blue Is the Warmest Color: Dodgers 4, Phillies 0

Can it be any accident that at the exact moment the Dodgers closed out their latest victory, my screening of the Cannes Film Festival winner was beginning. The film was terrific, a worthy (and platonic) companion to my warm feeling toward the Big Blue Wrecking Crew.

Nine wins in a row
, 8 1/2 game lead in the National League West, 24-3 after the All-Star Break, 41-8 since June 22.

Wow, redux.

    From Dodgers.com:

    >>Ramirez, who also created an insurance run in the ninth, didn’t deny
that the sore right shoulder has bothered his swing, as well as his
    throws.

“I don’t want to think about it,” he said. “I’ve got to stay
positive. This team needs me in the lineup, that’s what the guys tell
me, they support me and I’m going to die on the field for this team and
for the fans of the city.” <<<

Contrast that with the lackadaisical play by the Phillies . . . play which reminded some of month-of-May Dodgers.

Does the great attitude create the wins, or the other way around?
Whichever, I hope this Dodger/Winning Fever infects the team well into October . . . for many years to come!

    • Bob_Hendley

He seems to have come into the season, starting with the WBC, with this attitude. It could end with him on the DL for an extended period, so DM and the trainers need to keep a close eye on him.

Oops! Make that 24-3 after the All-Star Break!

  3. ASW1

Wow – Eovaldi got smoked by the hapless Gnats : 12 hits, 11 runs (9 earned), on 82 pitches in THREE innings.

What happened inside the ballpark was more beautiful…Hanley’s lightning strike

#Dodgers look to make it two in a row vs. Phils as they send @ClaytonKersh22 to the mound at 4:05 PT: http://atmlb.com/14ROZqo

Looks like Ryan Braun is going to be the Lance Armstrong of baseball.

  7. KT

So the Dodgers need to win today to become the first team in 70 years to go 42-8, and Clayton Kershaw is on the mound. That seems doable.

    • TAFKA_Gagne55

Do you know what the record is for longest stretch of games with only 8 losses? Are the Dodgers even close to a record?

      • TAFKA_Gagne55

Ok, not sure if it’s the record but the 1906 Cubs finished their season on a 54-8 run.

Migeul Tejada isn’t he now a three time “loser”

Kersh has never beaten the Phillies in 8 career starts. 0-4. Time to put that to bed tonight.

Wow If this is true I never realized it

    • nsxtasy

It’s true. The only other NL team he has never beaten is the Braves (0-0). The Phils are one of two NL teams against whom he has a losing record, along with the Cards (4-5).
His record against the AL is 6-3 but he has only beaten four AL teams (two twice), and there are six AL teams he hasn’t faced. So that means there are 11 AL teams he has never beaten while they were in the AL, 10 he has never beaten at all (he beat the Astros when they were in the NL). The only AL team against whom he has a losing record is the White Sox (0-1).

    Dodgers lineup:
    Crawford LF
    Puig RF
    Gonzalez 1B
    Ramirez SS
    Ethier CF
    Ellis C
    Schumaker 2B
    Uribe 3B
    Kershaw P

    • Bob_in_Vegas

Let’s go — 10 in a row for the team, the first dozen for the Kid.

    • scooplew

Nice to see Ethier back in there.

      • Bob_in_Vegas

Let’s hope it’s not hurried. A good point was made in the postgame . . . with a big lead, there’s no need to rush players back. (Health concerns aside, I’m also of a mind that it’s not over until it’s over — get that mathematical elimination!)

    • This was SportsCenter’s #1 Top Play overnight, but there was some skepticism as to whether it was really true. I’ve spent my share of time bowling, and I’ve never picked up a 7-10 split in my life, even with a 16-lb. ball. With two 3-oz. baseballs thrown from one hand? I gotta see it. :)

  11. TAFKA_Gagne55

Arizona is already up 8-0 on Pit. So it looks like today will not be a chance to extend the lead but will be a chance to gain ground for home field.

By the way: Some MLB staffers already talking about ways to delay long enough for managers to determine they are right before challenging.

    • John_from_Aus

we have challenges in cricket and the challenge needs to be within 15 to 30 seconds. Having a time limit should prevent this possible problem.

      • btimmer

This is not to say there aren’t an unlimited “How’s That?” said during a test match.

        • John_from_Aus

True, but that’s different to a video review of the umpires decision :)

Davey Lopes is sick tonight, so Jose Vizcaino will be filling in for him and coaching 1st base

  15. ASW1

I still like Kuroda, but I sure don’t mind seeing the Yanks get beat.

  16. Bumsrap

To make room for Wilson, I guess they could send down Withrow for 10 days to see what Marmol and Wilson are going to do before making a more permanent decision. In any case, Withrow is more likely to be on the Dodgers next year than any of next year’s free agents.
