Dodger Thoughts

Jon Weisman's outlet for dealing psychologically with the Los Angeles Dodgers, baseball and life

The Volquez Experiment, Episode 2

Tonight, the Dodgers try to find out if Edinson Volquez’s last start was the fault of Coors Field or the fault of Edinson Volquez not being any good any more. Trevor Cahill hopes to hold the Dodgers to fewer than six homers.

Adrian Gonzalez is the Dodgers nominee for the 2013 Marvin Miller Man of the Year Award sponsored by the Players Association. You can vote on the award and read about the other nominees at the MLBPA website. After Sunday, there will be winners from each division and then the players will choose from among those six.

Thinking about 2014 already? The Dodgers and Diamondbacks will open the season on March 22 in Sydney. Their North American opener will be March 31 at San Diego. Their Los Angeles opener will be April 4 against the Giants. And there will be a World Series rematch against the Tigers at Dodger Stadium on April 8-9.

OK, a little presumptuous on that one. But, if the Dodgers play the Tigers in the World Series, it would mean that the Dodgers would be the first NL team to play all eight of the original American League franchises in the World Series: Red Sox (1916), Cleveland (1920), Yankees (1941, etc.), White Sox (1959), Twins (1965), Orioles (1966), A’s (1974, 1988).

And this video made its Dodger Stadium debut last night:

Since sweeping the Dodgers, the Reds have failed to score in 13 innings against the Cubs. They lost 2-0 last night and are down 6-0 tonight.

  2. KT

    Go BLUE!!!!

  3. btimmer

The Cardinals, who scored 26 runs in a weekend sweep of the Pirates, are scoreless through 5 against Wily Peralta and the Brewers in an interesting game.

  4. Kershaw v. Verlander, Greinke v. Scherzer in Games One and Two this year, huh?

  5. btimmer

The game in St. Louis is no longer interesting. Matt Holliday hit a 2-run homer to put the Redbirds up 2-0 on the Brewers.

  6. btimmer

Edwin Jackson with a home run for the Cubs in Cincinnati. 9-0 Cubs in the 7th. Braves lead in Miami 4-3 in the 8th.

  7. btimmer

Braves won 4-3. Now at 87 wins. Dodgers at 84. Cardinals, up 3-0, have 83.

  8. KT

    Good eye Juanito

  9. KT

    Stolen base

  10. TAFKA_Gagne55

Ok, I switched to Yahoo! which is more up to date than ESPN tonight. Just curious for others who often follow on gamecast, which site do you prefer?

  11. KT

    Nice inning Eddie

  12. KT

Gonzo missed a homer by 1-2 feet

  13. Jack Dawkins

    really golfed that one out.

  14. KT

    walk a thon

  15. Jack Dawkins

Hanley looked odd running, but noone is looking at him.

    • KT

he’s sore…right off his ankle bone at about 100 mph…surprised he could score from second

      • TAFKA_Gagne55

If scoring from second on a double is an issue, then he probably should have been taken out.

        • KT

He was limping and grimacing as he was getting close to home

          • TAFKA_Gagne55

Ah, so he hurt himself running home? Although he did play shortstop the next inning so it couldn’t have been too bad. A cramp maybe?

          • KT

No he fouled a ball right off his left ankle and then walked on the next pitch and Gonzo walked so he didn’t get to stretch it out

  16. KT

nice way to end the inning

  17. Jack Dawkins

The replay at end of inning was interesting. The second base ump didnt signal out til Puig transferred the ball to his other hand. Seems like they are lookign for that from him now.

  18. TAFKA_Gagne55

Though not great by any means, Volquez did throw a quality start. Not too bad from an emergency starter.

  19. KT

    Beautiful pitch Paco

  20. KT

    Nice MEllis!

  21. scooplew

In there entire history, in Brooklyn and in Los Angeles, the Dodgers have had only four players with the initials E.V. Two of them are Eugenio Velez and Edinson Volquez. The other two are Elmer Valo and Ed Vande Berg.

  22. KT

    good eye Yasiel

  23. KT

    Let’s go Hanley

Man, I haven’t seen AJ do anything but hit grounders to the right side for a while now.

  28. TAFKA_Gagne55

I guess it says something about Kenley that my reaction is “hits in back to back appearances? What’s gone wrong with him?”

  29. KT

    on to the bottom

  30. TAFKA_Gagne55

Alright, time to get Kenley the W.

    • ASW1

Yeah – seems like it’s been awhile since Dodgers enjoyed a walk-off.

  31. ASW1

  41. btimmer
