  1. From the press notes:

    “According
to Baseball-Reference.com, Ryu is the first player to toss multiple
two-hitters within the first 28 starts of his career since Dontrelle
Willis in 2003, who accomplished the feat on June 16 vs. New York-NL and
June 21 vs. Tampa Bay, though that game was a weather-shortened
    5.0-inning affair.”

Go BLUE!!! Let’s cut this magic number in half

    • Bob_in_Vegas

Shouldn’t this be the bottom post? . . . Is that why we have this slump??????

      • KT

I posted it right after Jon posted his about a 1 sec difference but when I was posting it at the bottom of MSTI people started replying to it…I think it has lost it’s “magical” powers

I’d like to believe that my first small box memory of the Dodgers was the 1963 WS sweep, but what gets stuck in my head is Candlestick Park and black and white images of an outfielders trying to corral flyballs up against a chain link fence amidst swirling dirt and stadium trash, with bundled up fans looking on.

  4. Sandy K

The tweet above made me try to think about my oldest baseball memory. I’m not sure if I can remember. But one of my first, clear memories was Jim Gilliam drawing a walk to lead off an inning in Game 2 of the 1962 playoffs for the pennant against the Giants. The Dodgers had collapsed at the end of the season, forcing the playoff. They had been shut out 7-0 (I think) by Billy Pierce in Game 1. They couldn’t score at all down the stretch and then in that first game. And then Gilliam walked. Something happened. As I recall, they scored 7 runs (I think) in that inning and won the game. Of course, we all know what happened in Game 3. I still remember Stan Williams walking in from the bullpen and dreading what impended. And all my fears came true. I remember Lee Walls flying out for the last out–against Billy Pierce. I was disconsolate for days. Things turned out much better in 1963.

    • btimmer

Gilliam led off the 6th inning for the Dodgers with a walk. That led to a 7-run inning.
Walls batted for Larry Burright, who had made a big error in the 9th inning of the playoff.

      • Sandy K

Yeah, I just checked Retrosheet. Gilliam started an inning that turned a 5-0 deficit into a 7-5 lead and eventually an 8-7 victory. Dodgers lost the first playoff game 8-0. They had lost six of their last seven games before the playoff, having been shut out in the last two games.

Nats finish off a sweep of Atlanta with a 4-0 win in the 2nd game. However, St. Louis leads the Rockies 3-0 early at Coors. The Pirates are trailing late 5-2 against San Diego.

  6. Bob_in_Vegas

    Return of Hanley!

  7. Bob_in_Vegas

    C’mon, AGon!

  8. ASW1

That’s what I miss – his vicious swing!

  9. Bob_in_Vegas

Painful to hear Adrian’s futility. He was soo dependable for soo long.

Zack: ‘You mean I only have to worry about pitching tonight?’

  20. Sandy K

All this scoring, and the Dodgers’ best hitter, Greinke, didn’t even get up yet:)

  21. Hey, this isn’t being shown on Prime Ticket! What’s this blasted football game doing on?

  22. btimmer

    Three out, all out.

  23. btimmer

The Orioles scored a run against Koji Uehara in the top of the 9th. An actual run! They lead 3-2 in the bottom of the 9th. He hadn’t given up a run since July 6 and hadn’t given up an earned run since June 30.

  24. Greinke’s first 25 pitches: 20 strikes. Wowsers.

  25. KT

    Los Angeles Dodgers ✔ @Dodgers

An epic display of jazz hands from Juan Uribe — he also homered on the play. Watch: http://atmlb.com/1eNzgg7

  26. Bob_in_Vegas

I liked Vin’s story about Hanley’s enthusiastic response to being able to play tonight . . . and our response was the same, Hanley!

  27. Bob_in_Vegas

    AGon — again!!!

  28. There’s your butter and eggs.

  29. Bob_in_Vegas

If this lead holds up, I wonder if Kersh will argue to go manana.

  30. John_from_Aus

just tuned back in, I think we are awake now!

  31. Bob_in_Vegas

Bison! Bison! Bison! Bison! (doubling up the doubles) . . . looks like it was the day after that Sunday in D.C. — minus the injury!

  32. John_from_Aus

    • KT

  38. John_from_Aus

    nice walk Zac

  39. John_from_Aus

    very nice

  40. 3-3!

I guess Hanley was done running the bases…

    • John_from_Aus

the fact that he tried to go from 1st to 3rd on a single to centre is a good sign in regards to his hammy/back

  41. Jason Ungar

No way I’d think we would be 9 1/2 up with 12 left while Kemp/Hanley played only13 games total together

  42. dalegribel

Lousy time for a KCAL game.

  43. RBI

Two checked swings that looked like swings. Zack working hard.

  44. KT

    Nice Zack Standing O

  45. RBI

    Great, great pitch.

  46. Bob_Hendley

    Mattnificent!

  47. RBI

Matty must feel almost as good as we do!

  48. TAFKA_Gagne55

Glad to see they’re not risking an injury on the bases in a blow out.

  49. John_from_Aus

    I assume only being cautious

  50. John_from_Aus

chance for Aj for a bit of redemption

  51. John_from_Aus

    Let him bat for himself

    • Bob_in_Vegas

I agreed . . . I could see removing him as a pitcher, but give him another AB.

  52. Bob_in_Vegas

9 more outs — shut ’em down!

  53. Bob_in_Vegas

Nolasco and Young . . . possibly accountants or advertising agency . . . definitely great and good Dodger pickups

  54. ASW1

I’m loving the results of having Kemp and Hanley in the starting lineup together – also good to see them both taking the rest of the night off.

    • TAFKA_Gagne55

If it’s a close game, you’re going to see Paco. If it’s a blowout, you’re going to see Paco.

  55. Bob_in_Vegas

    C’mon, Kenley!!!!!!

  56. Bob_in_Vegas

Wasn’t it KJ who lost his focus last year and dropped the throw back to him and the winning run scored? (Or something goofy like that?)

    OH YEAH

  60. Bob_in_Vegas

Matt not only gets to join the fun . . . he’s a big reason for it tonight!

  61. KT

Kemp currently on post game radio

    • KingmansPerformance

KT when you get a chance please post my ‘magic #’ meme over at msti for me, I’m not able to log in there tonight. Thanks!

    • Bob_in_Vegas

Thanks for the heads-up . . . the local station went to their own postgame show but I went to MLB Audio and glad it’s a blast from the past . . . listening to it now.

    • Bob_in_Vegas

Really nice interview, especially because — as Matt said — him with the headset means he did something good. For those cynics who think he’d take the money and run, it was great to hear him say how much he wanted to play again. . . . And the fact he was awesome doesn’t suck, either!

We can see the promised land on the horizon

    • Bob_in_Vegas

Suddenly it seems to be at the bottom the hill . . . and picking up speed!

  64. Bob_Hendley

In his last two starts the Bison has gone 7 for 8, with a BB, 3 doubles, a dinger and 6 rbis.

  65. foul tip

Jon, apparently Myung saw your tweet about no XBHs yet and responded with a 3B.

If he hasn’t hit a HR or 2B by first playoff game, I suggest tweeting that in pregame. ;-])

  66. foul tip

Since Barney doesn’t stand to make the postseason roster despite his surprisingly solid performance this season, it’d be great for him to be winning pitcher tonight as the Dodgers clinch.

    • Bob_in_Vegas

Just to continue writing the script: Fife pitches a complete game, gets the final out on a K, and is forever documented getting props from teammates.

  67. foul tip

The offense erupted last night with Puig playing no part (unless wearing a golden sombrero plus whatever a 5th out is called counts)–even a better sign.

  68. foul tip

Looks like I may comment for the cycle, so here goes, from dodgers.com game story:

“”People don’t understand what it means to get 15 at-bats a day,” said Kemp, who hit in simulated games against the organization’s better Minor League pitchers assembled for instructional league. “I know they’re not up here, but you get your timing down and still have to get good pitches to hit.”

He said more, but I won’t copy it all here.

So does anyone want to go to the McCourt School of Public Policy at Georgetown?

Because one of our heroes just gave it an endowment.
