Former NFL defensive back Jarrad Page from UCLA earned a minor-league deal with the Dodgers following their open tryout. Bill Shaikin of the Times points to this 2005 Ben Bolch story about the two-sport athlete, now 27.

In other news, the Lakers have offered a contract to Matt Kemp. (Not really, but I’ve heard worse ideas …)

David Pinto of Baseball Musings points to a New York Times online piece that offers audio of the Mets’ first Spring Training game in their history. In part of the excerpt, Howard Cosell talks about and to Gil Hodges.

At Opinion of Kingman’s Performance, Evan Bladh remembers umpire Harry Wendelstadt, who passed away Friday.

  1. Watching Springsteen/Apollo clips online. Just had to tell my daughter, “They’re not booing; they’re saying BRUUUUUUUUCE!”

    Such priceless moments.

    • I’m holding out on Springsteen’s set list’s etc. until the L.A. shows-this will not be easy.  I’ve got the Dodger games to see me through.  Jon do you the story of Tom Petty and Springsteen at No Nukes???

I saw Springsteen once back around the mid 80’s in the Tacoma Dome with a friend of my brother. The special part of the evening was it was all of our birthdays. 9/23

  2. I posted part of this to Evan’s blog.  As I remember it, Orel’s streak survived when Paul Runge called a double play on interference at 2B and negated a run.  And Runge, like Wendelstedt, was a tough, fair, terrific umpire.  Wendelstedt worked for years with Lee Weyer, also a big guy who tied way too young (age 51), and apparently they once asked the National League to let them become pro wrestlers in the off-season and the league shot it down.

That interference call occurred in SF right?

    • Anonymous

Yes, it did. Brett Butler was called out for interference after trying to take out Alfredo Griffin on a slide that put him somewhere in the vicinity of San Rafael. Ernest Riles was the batter.

Can’t hit free throws or deal with a backcourt press, but other than that we should go far.  Hoya Saxa!

Sounds as if Josh Fields is earning himself a place in Albuquerque, at least.

  9. Are we supposed to check the radio button at Yahoo to make the March Madness group eligible for the $5M sweepstakes?
