Dodger Thoughts

Jon Weisman's outlet for dealing psychologically with the Los Angeles Dodgers, baseball and life

Uribear unstuffed

Though the defense remains solid, Juan Uribe’s offense has deteriorated since his seven-RBI game July 5. He has a .247 on-base percentage and .266 slugging with three walks and 18 strikeouts in his last 86 plate appearances, dropping his 2013 OPS from .800 to .708.

Not too hard to surmise that if the Dodgers make any more deals this season, 3B would be a likely spot. But, who?

Or maybe Cliff Lee. Unlikely, that.

  5. I missed much of the game last night. Curious how Dee Gordon looked. Thoughts?

    • Anonymous

I also missed the game but good to see he had a couple hits – will be nice to have his speed around for pinch-running if/when needed until Hanley returns.

    • Anonymous

Two hits but booted a ground ball.

  6. Also, saw that Dan Haren and Kyle Loshe have been put on waivers. That could be curious. Loshe is obviously older and Haren has been prone to the home run ball this season. Might be my Oakland roots showing, but I think a Haren pick up might be nice.

Not sure either is an upgrade over Cappy/Fife

Just did a quick look at satellite and radar…there is a line of thunderstorms popping up to the southwest of STL but looks like they will stay to the south as they propagate across the midwest…My forecast is we will be ok…no rain for the game

May be down, but lets not count him out nor forget he is part of what got the Dodgers to this point.

Did I hear Lyons say no error can be charged on a foul ball right after Freese made an error on a foul ball?

    • KT

      no he didn’t say that

      • Anonymous

what did he say about errors on foul balls?

        • KT

It was Collins who talked twice in a row after Lyons talked about him trying to hurry up and make the catch…the second phrase out of Collins mouth was him emphasizing “You Can make and error on a foul ball”. The “can” part was drawn out and almost sounded like can’t…just “rewound” the DVR

  49. Great start for Ryu, nice to see him not give up a ton of hits.

  50. Anonymous

I don’t want to take anything for granted . . . but in a short series — post-season, for instance — the trio of Zack, Ryu, and the Kid will be awfully imposing. The key — as it has been all season — is the offense.

Don’t forget – the Cards scored 13(Pirates), 13,3,and 15(all vs. Reds) in last 4 before this series.
Dodgers held them to 2,5,4, and 1 to take 3 out of 4.

  69. KT

don’t care about the #1 seed in the NL or think it’s too soon but here it is:

Dodgers solely in 4th place in the NL standings.

interesting video of Puig’s flip to Ethier after catch. Don’t think this was talked about on Dodgers telecast but I am prepared to be wrong on that.
    http://wapc.mlb.com/play/?content_id=29543995&query=&game_pk=348457

    • Anonymous

Saw that, but Lyons was strangely for me mum on it, though he marveled at the routineness for Puig of catching a ball that otherwise had double written all over it.

      • Anonymous

ESPN this morning showed the play and then showed Ellis talking to Puig in the dugout telling him that had Ethier had dropped the ball the hitter would have been safe. As I remember, players have to take the ball out of their glove before the catch becomes an out–what Puig did is not considered taking the ball out of the glove.

  77. Spence

I wish the playoffs would start next week.

    • KT

I don’t that would mean this great season would be over soon and would you really want to start the playoffs without a healthy Hanley or Matty???

    From ESPN article (not Saxton):

    http://espn.go.com/blog/los-angeles/dodger-report/post/_/id/6678/dodgers-make-a-statement-in-st-louis

“The St. Louis Cardinals are not just any other team, and Busch Stadium has not been just any other ballpark for the Dodgers.”

“Thursday’s 5-1 win gave the Dodgers only their second series win at Busch Stadium over the past decade. In fact, before Wednesday’s 13-4 blowout win, the Dodgers were just 9-24 over the past 10 seasons in St. Louis.”

Not sure about this, but in that video, there is a guy who walks over and sits on the dugout bench before Ellis starts counselling Puig – he might be an interpreter.

    • Anonymous

Never happen, but Ned can dream…

    • Anonymous

They probably placed a lot of players on waivers. They just want to see if someone is interested. They would bring him back off of waivers if he got claimed.

      • Anonymous

no they wouldn’t; not with League’s contract

        • foul tip

We can hope they wouldn’t. He might be effective at times, but he’s been inconsistent, and even Guggenheim probably would like to be rid of that dumb contract.

    • KT

Usually everyone goes on revocable waivers this time of year that way if a trade situation comes up they have already past through waivers and can be dealt to the new team

Enjoyed the game in person last night (game 4 in St. Louis). Wonderful way to cap off the series, albeit a little sloppy in the field with Ethier’s weird throwing error and Puig’s walk to gather in that single. They were looking a little sluggish. But Ellis comes through large after I had just said to my son, I’d take a bases clearing double right now.

Cards fans again proved to be the nicest fans on the planet (as they do every year we drive over), engaging us in conversation, laughs, and wishes of good luck and drive home safe while looking like small dot of blue in a sea of red. Funny that most assume we came in from LA for the game. No, we’re just Vero Beach natives who now live in the Kansas City area.

    Let’s keep it going!

    • KT

Puig was trying to bait Carpenter into trying to go for second on that play so he could throw him out

    • Bob_in_Vegas

Nice to hear about cordial fans rooting for the opposition. I’ve found when I have rooted for the Blue in Wrigley, the BOB (back when AZ had a much cooler-sounding stadium!), or Petco, I get respect from their fans as long as I’m respectful.

Sick of hearing about the @Dodgers going 34-8? Me neither….here is what each individual has done since June 22 http://www.valleybaynews.com/2013/08/05/los-angeles-dodgers-team-stats-since-june-22/

    • ASW1

Fun stats to look at – My favorite and maybe the most impressive on the page is the “complete team pitching” line : 42 Games, 384 IP, 2.60 ERA, 1.11 WHIP

    • Bob_in_Vegas

That’s fun, KT, thanks. I especially like the breakdown of the remaining opponents. This division title is the Dodgers’ for the taking!

  91. mike_tink

    from Cardinals game story:
Martinez lit up the radar gun — reaching 100 mph twice, 99 mph 13 times and 98 mph on another 15 occasions.
    .
Also, there is a longer quote from AJ.

  92. Dodgers vs. David Price:
    M Ellis 2B
    Punto SS
    Gonzalez 1B
    Puig CF
    Hairston LF
    Uribe 3B
    Federowicz C
    Schumaker RF
    Capuano P

At the risk of being too negative, I feel like this is the Rays’ game to lose.

    • Bumsrap

The logic of this lineup to be consistent should have Gonzalez hitting lower in the lineup or maybe have Grienke playing 1st or RF.

    • ASW1

      Hmmmm. Well, uh…., hmmmmm.

    • Bob_in_Vegas

I think the only fear this lineup inspires is in the hearts of Dodger fans.

    • Bob_Hendley

Night off against the tough lefty, with Skippy the sacrificial lamb.

  93. KT

Can’t remember who asked me yesterday about if Puig was leading the pitchers also in war:

Puig is at 3.2 WAR, easily leading rookie batters. The next closest is A.J. Pollock with 2.5 WAR. Jose Fernandez does have 3 WAR, though.
