Dodger Thoughts

Jon Weisman's outlet for dealing psychologically with the Los Angeles Dodgers, baseball and life

Zack Greinke was a Giant-killer in 2014

It didn’t get very much press in 2014, but Zack Greinke had an absolutely dominant season against the World Series champion San Francisco Giants.

Greinke made five starts — going 5-0 — against the Giants with a 1.59 ERA and 36 strikeouts in 34 innings, while allowing 32 baserunners. All five victories came immediately after a Dodger loss.

San Francisco had 39 total bases in those 34 innings, and did not steal a base. He had nine strikeouts for every walk.

Best remembered is the monster 17-0 victory on September 13, when Greinke pitched six shutout innings and also doubled, walked and homered. (Greinke had a .462 on-base percentage against San Francisco in 2014.)

But Greinke was at his most dominant on the mound July 25, when he threw seven shutout innings, striking out 10 — including four in the third inning — while surrendering only four singles and a walk. One Giants baserunner made it past first base, in the first game of a three-game sweep that took the Dodgers from second place in the National League to first.

Add in a six-inning, one-run outing against the Giants in 2013, and Greinke has made six starts as a Dodger against San Francisco without ever allowing more than two runs.

Greinke’s performance against the Giants this year is one of the reasons I think the Dodgers are more than capable of going all the way in ’15. They just got to believe it themselves.

  2. Professional Hitter too!!
