Go BLUE!!!! Keep the pace with the AAAA lineup

  2. Bumsrap

It would be interesting to see Pederson playing.

  3. RBI

    LAT’d

This one’s going to be pure fun to watch. Butera at 1st? Da da da.

  4. Bumsrap

Based on this line up maybe Skip and Jerry should worry about being on the playoff team

  5. RBI

Playing hard to keep on the roster…? All of them!

  6. How does it feel to be Elian Herrera right now?

  7. Bumsrap

Skip found a team where he can hit third

  8. Bob_in_Vegas

I can see the rationale to rest and I know there’s no “i” in team, but I hope there’s a good lineup to back Kersh. Wins shouldn’t mean that much in voting for pitching awards, but how can it not come into consideration?

    • Bob_Hendley

You realy think that with an ERA a run better than anyone above him in wins (except Grienke) and leading in IP and K’s that he won’t win the CYA?

      • DS1981

Yep, once Harvey went down it was gonna be Kershaw no matter what.

        • Bob_Hendley

Not sure what that means, the Kid had to pitch after Harvey went down, and he did. Wainwright seems like the runnerup at this point, has more wins and they have basically been neck and neck in K’s and IP, but that one run up (or down) in ERA is big for Kershaw.

          • DS1981

It means that a young good looking guy who pitches in New York and up to that point had a higher K rate than Kershaw was Kershaw’s only real challenger for cy young. Did you forget that another pitcher who pitched in new york undeservedly won it over kershaw last year?

          • Bob_Hendley

Oh sure. Sorry, the “no matter what” threw me.

      • Bob_in_Vegas

I know that I don’t have a vote . . . and I have mightily disagreed with those who have voted for such awards in the past. I’m sure there are some who are looking for any argument to NOT vote for Kershaw.

  9. Saturday’s lineup: Kershaw CF, Marmol 2B, Greinke SS, Jansen C, Ryu 1B, Nolasco LF, Belisario 3B, Rodriguez RF, Schumaker P

  10. Isn’t Butera a catcher?

  11. NoahUCLA

I wonder if Volquez is pissed, or is very excited to take one for the team?

    • WBBsAs

I expect Vólquez is pleased to be pitching at all, let alone with a division champion.

  12. thescrounger

I would like to see Kemp get more at-bats, he definitely needs them…

    • WBBsAs

I’m sure he will, but there’s no need to overdo while he’s still recovering from injury.

  13. RBI

Not sure about “greater,” but “more entertaining,” for sure.

  14. jim hitchcock

    Not a swimmer amongst them.

  15. KT

Back to back jacks and the Bucs lead the Reds 2-1

  16. These must be the only guys on the roster who aren’t hungover today.

  17. Markbleedsblue294

Awesome…. Drew Butera at 1B! Never saw that one coming…

  18. WinnipegDave

Makes you realize that it is not only wonderful to have clinched the division, but also to be playing against teams who are not fighting for a playoff spot. I imagine that Mattingly would still feel quite free to rest whoever/whenever but there may have been some questions or comments about competive balance.

I also wonder if this line-up is what a “losers dividends” line-up would look like. I am head over heals for receiving the “winners dividend” this year instead.

  19. Jack Dawkins

This also answers the question about whether its more important to get people rested or healthy or to have home field advantage in the first round. (As far as the powers that be in blue are concerned.)

  20. package206

It sure would be nice to see the Dodgers play. This lineup is a joke and so is the manager. I don’t think a sub should be at every position. That is just like saying it is OK to lose. Gimme a break!!

    • berkowit28

Take your own break, and come back when the postseason begins if that’s how you feel.

      • package206

Just because I do not agree with this type of managing does not mean that I want to forget winning any of the games. Thanks for your solution but I do not find it a good alternative.

        • Guest

Winning the most regular season games is not te main objective, winning the World Series is, resting in preparation for the postseason makes the most sense right now

    • WinnipegDave

I do understand why you might feel like this but I would suggest 2 things. The first is that 1 out of 162 is a very small number – just over a half of a percent. The second and most important is that even this lineup with these particular players have some pride and will play with great intensity. They have not lost the game at this point.

    • DS1981

You know what, if this was any other sport i would agree with you, but this is baseball and history shows that baseball playoffs are nothing more than a lottery or as most baseball fans now call it a “crapshoot”. Having home field does not matter, being hot/cold going into the playoffs does not matter, regular season records do not matter. I understand why some baseball fans still reject this notion, because it makes baseball seem no different than poker, but it is what it is.

  21. Jack Dawkins

I imagine that the Padres will look at this lineup and use it as a chance to play a lot of their callups as well.

  22. WailingAndGnashingOfTeeth

    We got this. EZ.

  23. KT

Look at Mark rogandino’s face while AJ bombs them during Dodgers live

  24. Jack Dawkins

I’ve sat through 23 minutes of the pregame show watchign Steve Lyons, and not one word about the pool. I feel deprived.

  25. Jack Dawkins

Atlanta won, Cardinals trailing, Pirates on top of the reds at the moment.

  26. At least there’s an excuse for this one. Remember the Grabowskis/Mike Edward sludge lineups?

I’m still hoping for that Joe Shlabotnick cameo, and maybe Peppermint Patty.

Or maybe they should do a Battle of the Network Stars lineup one night.

  27. Bob_in_Vegas

    Fly, Dee!

  28. KT

  29. KT

    extra’s in pittsburgh

  30. Bob_in_Vegas

More evidence Dee’s value is on offense only, at least for now.

  31. Jack Dawkins

Gordon showing why he will only be a runner in post season. They will have to issue mitts to everyone sitting behind first base otherwise.

  32. Bob_in_Vegas

Reds are proving why I’m rooting for Pittsburgh.

  33. package206

Well, that’s one run allowed by Mattingly.

    • Bob_in_Vegas

Wow, Vin must really be losing it — he said Dee Gordon had the 2-base error, not Mattingly.

      • Package, would you really play Ramirez tonight regardless of his condition?

        • package206

I would not play Ramirez but I would play Crawford, Puig, M. Ellis,A Gonzo, Uribe. At least give some effort.

          • So it’s not fair to say the run is on Mattingly. Putting aside the fact that Ramirez also makes errors. And the fact that three of the five players you named above also have nagging injuries.

          • package206

Jon, all I am saying is that there was no effort put in this lineup. Donnie has made no attempt to win this game and he thinks it is funny. Surely everyone who reads this blog does not think that this is fair to the fans and the team. Also, it does not keep any players sharp. some regulars may need to play as opposed to resting. Now, is this what you would have done??

          • Jack Dawkins

Its fair to this fan if it means a better result after the first 162 games.

          • This line up doesn’t bother me. Though if I had tickets to the game, I’d be a bit bothered.

  34. RBI

    Butera’s trial by fire.

  35. KT

play at the plate…hopefully this works:

    http://youtu.be/eFyWkShPFSk

  36. Jack Dawkins

The Dodger score is not a surprise, but the Padre score pleasantly is.

  37. Jack Dawkins

The only other Butera that comes to my mind is Sam Butera, who played sax for Louis Prima all those years.

  38. btimmer

This was the Giants starting lineup last year the day after they clinched the NL West. They also played the Padres:
    Blanco CF
    Theriot 2b
    Arias 3b
    Nady Lf
    Pill 1B
    Peguero RF
    Whiteside C
    Burriss SS
    Petit P

  39. Brewers blew 4-2 lead against Cards, now trailing 6-4 in bottom of ninth but have two on with one out.

  40. Infield hit and Brewers tie the Cardinals in bottom of ninth with one out, bases loaded still.

  41. GIDP, and Brewers-Cardinals go to extras. Sheesh.

    • btimmer

I was not expecting that out of Carlos Gomez. The hits in that inning came from players in inverse quality of ability.

  42. btimmer

On September 21, 1977, the day after the Dodgers clinched the NL West, Tommy Lasorda penciled in this lineup:
    Rafael Landestoy, 2B
    Ron Washington, SS
    Dusty Baker, LF
    Steve Garvey, 1B
    Vic Davalilo, RF
    Lee Lacy, 3B
    Glenn Burke, CF
    Johnny Oates, C
    Doug Rau, P

    • Bob_Hendley

I have forgotten, or never knew, that Ron Washington played for us.

  43. Well I don’t think Jerry is making the post season roster on defensive merits.

  44. KT

2nd and 3rd no outs for cards

  45. John_from_Aus

So I guess based on the starting lineup philosophy today, League would be the next to pitch

  46. btimmer

In 1988, it was hard to tell if Lasorda really trotted out the best lineup after the Dodgers clinched the West:
    Griffin SS
    Sax 2B
    Hatcher LF
    Marshall RF
    Shelby CF
    Hamilton 3B
    Dempsey C
    Woodson 1B
    Belcher P

  47. John_from_Aus

Edinson – “Don, I would really like to win against my old team, who’s playing for us today?”
Don – ” Do you really want to know?”
    Edinson – “No”

  48. Bob_Hendley

Well, now that Marmol has gotten that out of his system…

  49. That was almost something!

  50. Bob_Hendley

News flash: O’s have commited an error in today’s game

    • Bob_Hendley

They have already broken the ‘Stros 2008 record of 113 errorless games, and well on the way, with 46, to break Mariners 2003 error record of 65. Slouch Machado has 13 of them.

  54. Well this line up sure does allow for an exciting 9th of pinch hitters!

It like everyone has just woken up from their sleep ins

  57. RBI

    Same pitch, three times.

  58. John_from_Aus

I hope Don’s ready with fielding positions in case we tie this up

  59. Puig and Kemp’s at bats looked very similar. Oh well they gave it a shot there in the end.

  60. RBI

Kemp and Puig should watch that video.

  61. John_from_Aus

has there ever been so high quality pinch hitters 3 batters in a row :)

  62. KT

    This explains yesterday’s lineup:

““I told Don Mattingly he could only play the guys I had jerseys for,” Mitch said.”

    http://dodgerscribe.com/final-tidbits-from-an-evening-that-was-less-than-memorable/

  63. PismoBruce

Monday said it best last night-home field advantage does you no good whatsoever if you have no healthy players to send out on that field.

    • KT

Hey PB…Long time no read (must have missed your posts in the madness of yesterday)…Hope things have been well for you

      • PismoBruce

Has been a while. Got so used to the hiatus sometimes I forget to check in here. Or maybe I’m just getting old! Been well, hope you and all the DTers are doing great. Name Drop Alert: my cousin Chris in Reno has met Dr. Forest Tennant, as his GF is a nurse who works with Dr. Tennant when he is in Reno. Supposed to be getting comped playoff tickets from the good doctor. Booyah!

        • KT

I bought playoff tickets for the 1st time and immediately thought about taking my Dad…When I called yesterday to tell him they had news for me…He might have prostate cancer…this could put a wrench in my plans

          • package206

I hope your Dad feels better soon.

          • Bob_in_Vegas

My Dad was diagnosed over 10 years ago, had surgery, and is doing fine — I’m sure treatment is even better now.

          • KT

for prostate?…I haven’t researched yet but thought it was one of those areas that are hard to “cure”

          • Bob_in_Vegas

Yep — relatively high success rate when caught early. I have several friends who have had it — some diagnosed even before Dad — and all are doing fine.

  64. foul tip

Marmol with his career usual last night. No hits over 1.1 IP, walk 3, strike out 3.

He may be a worthy successor to the Cubs’ Mitch Williams. Recall an item in SI about Williams when in a 9th inning of a tight game he first walked the bases full, then struck out the side.

Head over the item read: “Wild thing, you make everything groovy.”

  65. foul tip

With 3 hits last night, Schu saying “hey, don’t forget about me. I don’t belong with these guys. I should be on the playoff roster.”

With a combined 9 Ks but 7 BBs over 7.2 IP, Volquez and Marmol saying…..well, I’m not sure. Maybe “use me and I’ll give you a heart attack.”

Did I see where the Dodger game is the mlb TV freebie for today?

    • btimmer

Yes, subject to blackout restrictions. Such as living in Southern California.

        • foul tip

Link, is the rumor true that your middle name is Blackout? ;-])

          • That’s no rumor, son, that’s the truth! See here:

The below-listed Club(s) is within the searched home television territory [my zip code], and MLB.TV is subject to blackout for all regular season live games for these Club(s):

            Oakland Athletics
            Seattle Mariners
            San Francisco Giants
            San Diego Padres
            Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim
            Los Angeles Dodgers

todays lineup, all the regulars back except Punto for Ramirez

    • ASW1

Good – we wouldn’t want the Gnats to accuse the Dodgers of trying to keep them in the cellar.

  71. Bumsrap

I didn’t watch any of last night’s game. I taped it and was going to look at the highlights.

That lineup would have been a great time to play small ball. Did Mattingley manage any differently?

    • KT

not too many missed opportunities except in the 9th…Ump blew a call to allow Denorfia to score in the 1st…still a 1-0 loss with the miss call

  72. KT

    Dodgers lineup:
    Puig RF
    Crawford LF
    Kemp CF
    Gonzalez 1B
    Uribe 3B
    M Ellis 2B
    AJ Ellis C
    Punto SS

    • ASW1

Happy to see Crawford and Kemp in there – Kemp needs to play in every game he’s physically able to the rest of the way.
