Kenley Jansen had allowed one run in the first 42 games of the season. Then he allowed two runs with one swing.

In a game that was topsy, turvy and topsy again, Melvin Upton Jr.’s two-run homer off Jansen, after an odd, pop-fly single that second baseman Chase Utley couldn’t corral, gave the Padres a walkoff a 7-6 victory at San Diego over the Dodgers.

It was the first walkoff homer Jansen allowed in his seven-season MLB career.

Upton’s homer negated a two-out, two-run homer by Justin Turner in the eighth inning after Carl Crawford’s pinch-hit single that had rallied the Dodgers to a 6-5 lead.

Turner’s homer had countered the two-run, sixth-inning shot by pinch-hitter Christian Betancourt off Scott Kazmir that had given the Padres a 5-4 lead. (That home run followed Scott Kazmir’s seventh walk, the most by a Dodger pitcher since Zack Greinke walked seven on July 3, 2013.)

Yasiel Puig (2 for 4) had given the Dodgers their first lead of the night with a two-run homer in the top of the fifth.

For Jansen, it was his first blown save in nine months, since August 23 at Houston, and only the second home run he had allowed in that span.

  1. This team is toast, do well against the playoff teams, at least holding their ground, and now when they have to play well against the bottom dwellers, fall flat.

It was a game in which whatever could go wrong went wrong, especially at the end. All we can do is turn the page, as they say.

  3. Jon – where was Joe Davis? Did I miss something important?

Joe’s contract calls for him to do 50 Dodger games this year. He is doing Fox’s national game this weekend.
