Bud Norris has officially replaced Rich Hill as the starting pitcher for the Dodgers’ second game at Colorado tonight.

Norris, who allowed two runs in five innings in his last start August 26 against the Cubs, will be pitching on four days’ rest. Dave Roberts told reporters he was viewing this series finale as a bullpen game (the last before Thursday’s off day and ensuing roster expansion).

The hope for Hill is that he slots in this weekend when the Dodgers host San Diego. Julio Urías is currently scheduled to take the mound Friday, but the next two starters haven’t been announced.

Scott Kazmir to see doctor in latest pitching twist

Screen Shot 2016-08-22 at 8.20.05 PM

By Jon Weisman

After retiring only seven batters in the Dodgers’ 18-9 victory today at Cincinnati, Scott Kazmir is scheduled to see a doctor on Tuesday, though the initial report of an MRI, as Cody Pace of MLB.com described, has been revised.

“Scott is fighting some physical things with his body,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “He’s doing what he can, but when your body doesn’t feel right, mechanically, it affects mechanics. He knows he wants to go out there and go deeper in a game. When you’ve got a 6-1 lead, he wants the decision, for himself, for the team. When you’re physically limited and you can’t execute, he’s frustrated.”

Kazmir is dealing with some stiffness in his neck and his back, something he said that he’s been dealing with “for years.” The problem with his neck in particular has messed with Kazmir’s mechanics, not allowing him to get his head toward the catcher properly and resulting in him flying open. …

… “No matter what happens, we’ve gotten this far,” Kazmir said. “I know how my body works. If we have some type of imaging, whatever happens, I’ll strengthen it up and I’ll continue to do what I do.”

Kazmir’s next start would theoretically be Saturday against the Cubs. Between now and then, about the only sure thing for the Dodgers is that Kenta Maeda will take the mound Tuesday against the Giants. Rich Hill remains on track to start Wednesday, and then the bigger question marks arise.

Bud Norris struggles, on a memorable night for a Reds reliever

Kirk Irwin/Getty Images

By Jon Weisman

From the moment he had the Cincinnati grounds crew work on the mound before throwing his first big-league pitch in 19 days, Bud Norris rarely looked comfortable, and he rarely got comfortable in what became a 9-2 loss Friday to the Reds, a loss that dropped the Dodgers into a temporary first-place tie with San Francisco in the National League West.

Three batters into the game, Norris was down 3-0 after a walk to leadoff hitter Billy Hamilton, a single by one-time Dodger Ivan De Jesus Jr. and a three run homer by Joey Votto. Norris stabilized some in the second and third innings, but was knocked out in the fourth by a two-run double form opposing pitcher Tim Adleman and a bases-loaded walk by Votto.

The Dodgers reached base 17 times (four by Corey Seager), enough to threaten the Reds more than once, but their only run-scoring hit was Seager’s single in the seventh to cut the Reds’ lead to 6-1. Then, in the bottom of the inning, Reds reliever Michael Lorenzen drilled a ball with two runners on into the surely-you-jest stream.

It had to be a special and surreal moment for Lorenzen, whose homer was his first and came hours after he was reinstated from the bereavement list following the passing of his father.

Update: Cody Pace of MLB.com has more from Norris on his difficulties.

Clayton Kershaw eyeing Saturday bullpen session

PITTSBURGH PIRATES VS LOS ANGELES DODGERS

By Jon Weisman

Some quick Dodger pitching updates for before the game:

  • Clayton Kershaw is expected to meet the Dodgers in Cincinnati, where he will throw off flat ground Friday with a tentative bullpen session scheduled for Saturday.
  • Bud Norris remains scheduled to be activated from the disabled list Friday, with Brett Anderson starting Saturday.
  • Lefty reliever Adam Liberatore is expected to be activated from the disabled list Friday as well, meaning the Dodgers would have to make two roster moves in the next 24 hours.
  • Kenta Maeda, whose next turn in the rotation would be Sunday, might get extra rest, with the Dodgers turning to an in-house spot starter in that case.
  • Rich Hill is pitching a simulated game at Camelback Ranch tonight.
  • Hyun-Jin Ryu is rehabbing but has not picked up a baseball. He is not expected to return for the Dodgers in 2016.

As expected, Brandon McCarthy has been placed on the 15-day disabled list by the Dodgers with right hip stiffness. Ken Gurnick of MLB.com reported on the likelihood of this Saturday.

Less expected is the news that reliever Josh Ravin will be joining McCarthy on the DL, because of right triceps soreness. Ravin walked two, threw a wild pitch and struck out one in 2/3 of an inning Saturday.

Those moves make room for the activation of Brett Anderson from the 60-day disabled list for today’s start, as well as the recall of Brock Stewart from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Here’s a recap and look ahead at the state of Dodger pitching, based on Dave Roberts’ comments to reporters today:

  • Today: Brandon McCarthy starts on five days’ rest. (A.J. Ellis, making his third start since July 28, will catch.) Bud Norris will make a rehab start of approximately 75 pitches for Single-A Rancho Cucamonga.
  • Sunday: Brett Anderson makes his 2016 debut. At Rancho, reliever Adam Liberatore is scheduled for a rehab outing.
  • Monday: While the Dodgers have a travel day, Rich Hill is likely to have a rehab start with Triple-A Oklahoma City.
  • Tuesday: Kenta Maeda starts the series opener in Philadelphia on six days’ rest, with Liberatore rehabbing again for Rancho.
  • Wednesday: Scott Kazmir starts, also on six days’ rest.
  • Thursday: This would be Ross Stripling’s turn, but according to what Roberts said today, Stripling will be available in long relief. McCarthy or Norris might make the start.
  • Over the next several days, pitchers that could be optioned to make room for Anderson, Norris and Liberatore include Urias, Stripling, Grant Dayton, Josh Fields and Josh Ravin.

Brandon McCarthy will start Sunday on four days’ rest after all, with the Dodgers postponing the anticipated activation of Rich Hill from the disabled list.

Dave Roberts told reporters today that Hill remains day to day because of remnants of a blister on a different part of his finger than the one that sent him to the DL in July.

McCarthy has thrown a total of seven innings over his past two starts, averaging 84 pitches.

Bud Norris was officially placed on the disabled list (retroactive to August 1), and Ross Stripling was officially promoted to start today’s game.

In 34 innings this month, the Dodgers have used 13 pitchers, with none pitching more than twice. Stripling will be their 14th pitcher in August, and Grant Dayton, recalled Thursday from Triple-A Oklahoma City, could soon be No. 15.

No reliever has thrown more than three innings in the past five days. Until things stabilize, Dodger pitching might continue to resemble a series of line changes that incorporate additions and subtractions from the minors and the DL.

Within the next two weeks, that could include the return of Brett Anderson, Louis Coleman, Casey Fien, Adam Liberatore, Hill and Norris from the disabled list. Jose De Leon, scheduled to pitch tonight for Triple-A Oklahoma City, is among those who continue to lurk in the minors. It’s not out of the question that the Dodgers will use 20 different pitchers in August alone.

Starting pitching remains in flux for Dodgers

Rich Hill today met reporters for the first time as a Dodger.

Rich Hill today met reporters for the first time as a Dodger.

By Jon Weisman

Though newly acquired left-hander Rich Hill is eligible to come off the disabled list Thursday, he will likely make a rehab start before his Dodger debut, according to Ken Gurnick of MLB.com.

Hill threw a bullpen session today, and said his finger blister was much improved, according to Gurnick. He hasn’t recorded an out since July 7, when he struck out 10 in six innings for Oakland in a 3-1 victory over Houston.

The Dodgers are also giving an extra day of rest to Kenta Maeda and Scott Kazmir, who were originally scheduled to start Wednesday and Thursday at Colorado. Maeda will start Thursday, with Kazmir taking the mound Friday against Boston. Kazmir remained in Los Angeles rather than making the trip to Colorado.

Also in Los Angeles is Bud Norris, who left his Sunday start after two batters because of right lat soreness. Norris is receiving back treatment, and the hope is that he would start Saturday for the Dodgers, though nothing is definite.

Pederson is second on the Dodgers with 16 doubles, 13 homers, 31 walks, a .476 slugging percentage, .342 weighted on-base average and 116 weighted runs created. The 24-year-old hasn’t played since crashing into the outfield wall Tuesday at Milwaukee and suffering a sprained right AC (acromioclavicular) joint.
