Clayton Kershaw is off the disabled list and back on the mound for the Los Angeles Dodgers, who made the move official this afternoon.

Cary Osborne caught us up on Kershaw this morning. Moments ago, Dave Roberts told reporters that the Dodgers will take things “inning to inning” tonight,” but that the schedule calls for Kershaw to make his next start on four days’ rest Wednesday at Yankee Stadium.

In between, the Dodgers will have Rich Hill and Kenta Maeda pitching against the Marlins, followed by rookies Jose De León and Julio Urías at New York. The latter two will have had more than a week’s worth of rest.

Roberts added that he expected to see Urías in the bullpen in October.

To create room on the 40-man roster for Kershaw, the Dodgers recalled right-handed pitcher Carlos Frias from Triple-A Oklahoma City, where he has been on the disabled list since July 12, and placed him on the big-league 60-day DL.

In doing so, the Dodgers have broken the known record for most players on the DL in one year with 28.

The 26-year-old Frias, who had a 3.95 ERA with 32 strikeouts in 43 1/3 minor-league innings this year, pitched in one game for the Dodgers in 2016, throwing four shutout innings July 7 against the Padres. He is tied for 14th all-time for the Dodgers in innings pitched with a single-season ERA of 0.00.

Carlos Frias did his job with four innings of shutout relief, but with the All-Star Break coming in three days, his presence on the Dodgers’ active roster is not required.

So Frias has been optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City, and replaced on the big-league roster by outfielder Andrew Toles.

In addition, Los Angeles acquired 21-year-old right-handed pitcher Alec Grosser as the player to be named later to complete the Bud Norris trade.

The Dodgers designated Cole Figueroa for assignment to create a spot on the 40-man roster for Toles, a 5-foot-10 left-handed hitter.

Toles, 24, was signed to a minor-league contract in September, after he missed the 2015 season, as Barry Lewis of the Tulsa World notes. A third-round draft pick in 2012 by Tampa Bay (when Andrew Friedman was running the show there), he has played at three levels for the Dodgers this year, most recently posting a .333 on-base percentage and .485 slugging percentage in 36 plate appearances for Oklahoma City.

The question with Hyun-Jin Ryu tonight, or at least one of the big ones after he spent more than a year recovering from shoulder surgery, was about the effectiveness of his fastball.

The San Diego Padres didn’t have much trouble answering it, knocking eight hits and scoring six runs over 4 2/3 innings, the length of Ryu’s first big-league appearance since the 2014 playoffs, in a 6-0 victory.

As presaged three days ago, Hyun-Jin Ryu has officially been activated by the Dodgers, who also promoted Carlos Frias from Triple-A Oklahoma City to support their heavily used bullpen.

To make room on the roster for the two right-handers, the Dodgers have designated outfielder Will Venable for assignment and will send reliever Luis Avilan to Oklahoma City.

As expected, the Dodgers activated Yasiel Puig from the disabled list today, with right-hander Carlos Frias returning to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Puig went 5 for 12 with a homer in five rehab games with Single-A Rancho Cucamonga last week. He and his strained left hamstring went on the disabled list June 3 with a .283 on-base percentage and .360 slugging percentage this year.

Frias did not appear in either game for which he was eligible following his Sunday promotion. The move makes it likely that Kenta Maeda will start Friday at Pittsburgh for the Dodgers on four days’ rest, followed by Clayton Kershaw and Scott Kazmir.

Carlos Frias has been called up from Triple-A Oklahoma City to bring a fresh arm to a tired Dodger pitching staff, with Mike Bolsinger being optioned down.

This move materialized as a likely possibility when Frias didn’t make a scheduled long-relief appearance Saturday, shortly before Bolsinger struggled to get seven outs.

Frias presumably could take Bolsinger’s turn in the rotation, but could be needed out of the bullpen first. In the past seven days, Dodger relievers have needed to face 96 batters, an average of 13.7 per day. The Dodgers have an off day Thursday, when Bolsinger was next scheduled to start.

Carl Crawford has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with lower back tightness, and the Dodgers have recalled Micah Johnson from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

As Ken Gurnick of MLB.com reported Friday, Crawford has been dealing with the back issue since the middle of Spring Training.

Crawford, who has missed at least a month a season with an injury for each of the last five years, said he has had occasional lower-back issues in the past that would “flare up and cool down.” He said he is particularly puzzled because he worked over the winter and spring specifically in an attempt to avoid injuries.

“It seems like the opposite happened,” he said. “I feel terrible about that. I really tried hard to maintain my strength in the core and back and I’m still having issues.”

Crawford was 3 for 11 with two RBI in the young 2016 season, playing 17 innings in three games in left field.

Johnson is a second baseman, but he started in left field Friday with Oklahoma City for the first time in his pro career. He was 3 for 9 in Triple-A in two games, after OPSing .841 in 2015 with 28 steals in 35 attempts.

Before the game was half over, Scully had a “deuces wild,” a “butter and egg man” and “out from me to you” – not to mention a whopping Dodger victory.

We expected superb pitching Wednesday by the Dodgers — we just didn’t expect it like this.

While Zack Greinke nursed his sore calf muscle, Carlos Frias and five relievers combined to deliver one of the top pitching performances of the year for Los Angeles, in a 4-1 victory over Arizona that helped lower the National League West magic number to five.

The Dodgers needed 105 pitches to dispatch the Diamondbacks, their fifth-best total for a nine-inning game in 2015. Even more impressively, Dodger pitchers had 28 pitches called for balls in the entire game, their second-best mark in 2015.

You know how you try to avoid three-ball counts? The Dodgers had four innings in which they didn’t throw a total of three balls.

Setting the tone was Carlos Frias. Pitching on two days’ rest, Frias used 43 pitches over his four innings, retiring every batter aside from the obligatory Paul Goldschmidt home run.

“Obviously, they had a few first-pitch swings,” Don Mattingly said this morning, “which you understand with a guy like him, you don’t really want to get deep in the count with that cutter/slider he throws and the way his ball moves.”

But Mattingly said Frias had a “Go get outs” mentality that was just right for Wednesday’s outing.

“When you have to go through (A.J.) Pollock and Goldschmidt and those guys in their order, they’ve got some tough hitters — it tells you he’s got the stuff to make it tough on those guys,” Mattingly said. “Even though Goldschmidt gets him, he made some guys look not that great.

“His stuff’s really good. Can he kind of — I shouldn’t say ‘keep focus,’ because he’s focused — for me a better (question) for him is can he stay settled down enough so that he’s making pitches, not just throwing?”

Assuming Greinke returns for his next scheduled start Monday in San Francisco, Frias has become a darkhorse candidate to play a more prominent role in the Dodger bullpen this year.

Juan Nicasio has been placed on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to Aug. 10) with a left abdominal strain by the Dodgers, who have activated Chris Hatcher from the 60-day DL.

Carlos Frias, out since July 1, has been moved to the 60-day disabled list.

Nicasio has allowed 62 baserunners in 47 innings this season while striking out 52. Since allowing three runs on July 5 and again on July 7, the right-hander, who turns 29 at the end of the month, has allowed two runs in 11 innings (with 13 strikeouts) and stranded all three inherited runners.

Hatcher has allowed 31 baserunners in his 18 1/3 Dodger innings with 19 strikeouts.

Some other quick notes …

Yasmani Grandal has been nursing a sore left (non-throwing) shoulder, but is back in the lineup tonight. Justin Turner also makes his first start since returning from the disabled list.
Joc Pederson on Thursday hit his second homer since July 1. Mike Petriello looked at Pederson’s contact rates for MLB.com.
Mat Latos spoke about his own struggles Thursday after a second consecutive subpar start. From Bill Plunkett of the Register:

“I just need to get back to pitching like me instead of trying to fool everybody, throw too many breaking pitches and so on and so forth,” Latos said. “Go look back at video and try to make some adjustments on how I used to pitch when I was getting outs.”

Latos could not say when that drift occurred and whether the change was in response to a gameplan devised by his new team, saying only that it has been “kind of like spring training all over again, trying to get used to a new team, get used to a new catcher.”

“I honestly can’t tell you,” he said. “I need to go back and look a couple years back when I was more fastball dominant, throwing more fastballs, locating better. I’ve gotten away from that and started throwing much more off-speed.

“Life moves pretty fast,” warned Ferris Bueller, no doubt with Jose Peraza in mind.

With Howie Kendrick and his strained left hamstring officially headed to the disabled list, Peraza — the 21-year-old infielder acquired from Atlanta in the Dodgers’ July 30 three-team deal — has been called up to make his Major League debut for Los Angeles.

Born on April 30, 1994 — the day that the Dodgers rallied from a 10-5, eighth-inning deficit to beat the Mets — Peraza is poised to become the youngest Dodger since Clayton Kershaw made his debut on May 25, 2008 at 20 years and 67 days. And, he’ll be the Dodgers’ youngest position player since Adrian Beltre, who was 19 when he was called up in 1998.

Peraza has a .318 on-base percentage and .379 slugging percentage in Triple-A this season, numbers that have soared to .415 and .590 since moving to Oklahoma City. He has also stolen 27 bases in 34 attempts this year.

Kendrick has a .341 OBP and .418 slugging percentage in his first season with the Dodgers and is fifth among National League second basemen in wins above replacement. Since July 20, Kendrick was hitting .396/.420/.583.

Also tonight, Scott Van Slyke is making his second career start batting in the No. 3 spot, and first since May 15, 2012. Kiké Hernandez is making his third career start batting fifth.

Also, Carlos Frias is back on the disabled list with lower back tightness. Frias was optioned to the minors earlier this month, but technically, that action has been voided.

Update: Van Slyke and Puig have shifted spots in the lineup.
