Dusty’s Trail: A return to Baker’s Field

LAD-0511-0016-0005

By Jon Weisman

It’s been 40 years since Riverside native Dusty Baker made his debut in a Dodger uniform. He has also spent 40 seasons in the Major Leagues — 19 as a player (including eight with Los Angeles) and 21 as a manager, including this year’s debut season helming the Washington Nationals.

Honors await Kenley Jansen, but his relationship with Don Newcombe is truly something to cherish

2016 HS05 Dodger Insider cover

By Jon Weisman

When I set out to do our latest cover story for Dodger Insider magazine on Kenley Jansen, the initial idea was to talk to the big reliever about his potential first All-Star appearance, or his approach toward the Dodger career save record.

But quickly the story switched to an angle I was only too happy to explore — Jansen’s close relationship with Dodger legend Don Newcombe.

“He’s my father in the United States,” Jansen said. “That’s what it feels like.”

“I think he’s a fine human being, a fine human being,” Newcombe emphasized. “He’s like a son to me, and he wants me to just be a part of his life. That’s all. No big deal, no instructions or anything, just a part of him.”

Jansen is 28 years old. Newcombe turns 90 in one week (his birthday will be celebrated at Dodger Stadium with his bobblehead night this evening). Generations separate them, but their connection runs deep — and it was a joy just to see how much.

The Amazing Chase: In his 14th season, Utley shows no signs of stopping

DI cover HS04 (May 23-25)

In the cover story of the most recent Dodger Insider magazine, we explored the resurgent — or maybe he’s just always surgent — Chase Utley.

For the 36th time this season, Utley is the leadoff hitter for the Dodgers. He leads the Dodgers in on-base percentage, but he does so much more.

“I’ve always taken pride in playing hard,” Utley told our Cary Osborne. “That’s something you have to do on a daily basis. It’s not the easiest thing to do, especially over the course of years and years and games and games. But if you’re able to have that mindset every game, you get the most out of yourself and therefore give your team the best chance to win.”

Said Corey Seager: “I watched him when I grew up. I had a buddy I played with forever who’s from Philadelphia and grew up a Phillies fan. … To be able to sit beside (Utley) is still cool. I still talk about it with my friend. I walk in every day, and he’s sitting there and he’s always there before you. He’s that kind of guy.”

Farm Fresh: Bellinger rings true

Cody Bellinger hit a 10th-inning walkoff grand slam Saturday for Double-A Tulsa, which makes Cary Osborne’s current Dodger Insider magazine feature on the 20-year-old all the more timely (a bit more so than Mike Petriello’s Gamevolution piece on Yimi Garcia, who went on the disabled list shortly after our magazine went to print).

In the cover story for the latest issue of Dodger Insider magazine, Kenta Maeda — tonight’s starting pitcher for the Dodgers — speaks to Cary Osborne about the differences between Japan and the United States, and the adjustments he has been making.

“I was the ace of the staff in Japan,” said Maeda, who enters tonight’s game with a 1.66 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 35 strikeouts in 38 innings. “Coming over here, I need to prove myself again to hopefully eventually be in that position.”

Rick Honeycutt and Dave Roberts chime in to discuss why Maeda is capable of transcending in this journey across the Pacific.

Introducing the 2016 Los Angeles Dodgers Yearbook: Clayton Kershaw, Vin Scully and more

2016 yearbook cover
By Jon Weisman

In June, Clayton Kershaw will celebrate his 10th anniversary in the Dodger organization. In turn, the Dodgers are celebrating Kershaw in the 2016 Yearbook.

Publishing at the start of March — in time for the opening game of Spring Training — and available at both Dodger Stadium and Camelback Ranch, the 2016 Yearbook will feature a special 27-page section reminiscing over the divine decade of Kershaw’s life as a Dodger.

In addition, 2014 Yearbook cover subject Vin Scully will receive a special tribute of his own in the 2016 Yearbook, which takes a trip through memory lane with the legendary, beloved broadcaster.

Of course, the 2016 Yearbook looks ahead as well, offering a big compilation of season previews of every Dodger on the roster, top prospects and new manager Dave Roberts, as well as tidbits about going to Dodger Stadium in the coming year, and much more.

A season’s worth of enjoyment is packed into nearly 200 pages, available for only $15.

For those ordering the yearbook online, place your order by February 15 for earliest possible shipping.  Special offer: The 2016 Yearbook is free with a year’s subscription to Dodger Insider magazine.

To place an order or for more information, visit dodgers.com/yearbook.

Dodger Insider magazine: Free at Dodger Stadium in 2016

By Jon Weisman

There’s a big change coming in 2016 for the Dodgers’ official magazine.

Starting in April, Dodger Insider magazine will be distributed for free at the autogates at every Dodger Stadium regular-season game.

Previously, Dodger Insider magazine cost $5 per issue, while the Dodger Playbill received free autogate distribution (one per vehicle). We are merging the two publications into one great magazine for everyone.

Each issue of the new Dodger Insider magazine will be at least 80 pages, plus a scorecard, with the news, features, photos and games you have grown accustomed to seeing in the program over past years.

There will be a new issue for every homestand, meaning that there will be at least 160 pages of free content each month during the season, plus a 13th issue at the start of October. All free.

Fans who arrive via alternative transportation will be able to pick up a copy of the new magazine at Fan Services booths in Dodger Stadium.

The bonus for this blog is that, unlike past years when we had to limit what we could share online from the magazine, that wall comes down this year. So everyone online will have access to the best pieces from the magazine.

If you still want to subscribe to the magazine — we do have our out-of-town fans, for example — don’t worry. Subscriptions are available at dodgers.com/magazine, for an annual cost of $39.95. Each issue will be polybagged to protect it during shipping.

Special offer: The 2016 Yearbook ($15 value) is free with a new year’s subscription to Dodger Insider magazine.

Note: Current Dodger Insider magazine subscriptions will be honored, with one issue of the previous monthly magazine counting as two issues of the new twice-a-month magazine. For any questions or concerns about current print subscriptions, email subscription.service@skies.com or call (877) 258-3062.

Dodger Insider magazine — September 2015 edition

September 2015 cover

September magazine sidebarBy Jon Weisman

He is a man of family. A man of faith. A man of baseball. And for Clayton Kershaw, the spirit he brings to one informs the spirit he brings to all.

That’s the approach we took to our special, 13-page photo essay in the September issue of Dodger Insider magazine that highlights numerous aspects of Kershaw’s love of the game.

September also presents a package of pieces on the Dodger bullpen — but don’t be nervous. There’s a fun feature on the unique, odd-couple relationship between Kenley Jansen and J.P. Howell, plus a 100-year history of the Dodger relief corps. Another story you should enjoy, written by Mark Langill, is what happens at Dodger Stadium after the final out to tuck our beloved ballpark in at night.

In all, there are more than two dozen stories in Dodger Insider magazine, plus all the usual great photos, games, tidbits and more. For $5 at the ballpark, it’s a bargain.

Dodger Insider magazine is available at all Dodger team stores.

Dodger Insider magazine — August 2015 edition

August 2015 cover image

Sidebar AugustBy Jon Weisman

After making the NL All-Star team in his first year as a Dodger, Yasmani Grandal graces the cover of the August 2015 issue of Dodger Insider magazine (on sale beginning today). In the story, “Player To Be Famed Later,” we highlight Grandal’s journey from relative anonymity to becoming an All-Star and the most productive catcher in the National League this side of Buster Posey.

Dodger Insider’s biggest issue of the season to date also features Cary Osborne’s multifaceted, in-depth examination of Yasiel Puig and his effort to conquer baseball adversity, two years after making a smash big-league debut at age 22. We have charts and analysis from the intermingling scout and sabermetric branches of baseball, as well as introspective thoughts from Puig himself.

Another fun piece in the issue, in addition to all you see at right, is team historian Mark Langill’s look at some of the great unlikely heroes of past Dodger stretch runs. Also, Mike Petriello gives  us more insight into how MLB’s Statcast helps fill in the blanks of our baseball comprehension.

In total, there are more than two dozen stories, plus all the usual great photos, games, tidbits and more. For $5 at the ballpark, it’s a bargain.

The August 2015 Dodger Insider magazine is available at all Dodger team stores. To subscribe, visit dodgers.com/magazine. Orders taken through August 7 will begin with the September issue.

Dodger Insider magazine — July 2015 edition

July 2015 Dodger Insider cover

July sidebarBy Jon Weisman

Where did all your Dodgers come from?

As the cover of July’s Dodger Insider magazine shows, we connect the past to the present and the west to the east, in a special 17-page section that details the birthplaces of Dodger players great and small, state-by-state. (Don’t worry, we haven’t forgotten our friends from around the world as well.) It’s a rich, diverse geographic history of an indispensable American team.

“A Nation of Dodgers” is one of more than two dozen features in this month’s issue of the official team magazine, including a behind-the-scenes piece on how catchers Yasmani Grandal and A.J. Ellis conquer baseball’s most painful position.

Dodger Insider also revisits the mystery behind the missing ball from Kirk Gibson’s 1988 World Series home run. And, you won’t want to miss Vin Scully talking about his favorite photo at Dodger Stadium.

The July 2015 Dodger Insider magazine is available at all Dodger team stores. To subscribe, visit dodgers.com/magazine. Orders taken through July 10 will begin with the August issue.

Adrian Gonzalez’s place in history: A Dodger Insider special

first-things-first-fb

By Jon Weisman

You know Adrian Gonzalez had a great start to 2015. You know he has had a great career.

But do you really appreciate how high Gonzalez is rising among the best first basemen in the history of the game?

Answering that question was a main goal of Cary Osborne’s Dodger Insider feature, which was our May cover story and is now the latest in our new series of online specials.

What we found might surprise you: Gonzalez is already a top-40 first baseman all-time, and aside from Eddie Murray and (for now) Gil Hodges, he is well positioned to finish his career as the greatest first baseman to spend any significant time in a Dodger uniform. But read the entire story to get the details.

Our inaugural special, “Inside the #RallyBanana,” can be accessed here, our “Meet the Originals” package on the 50th anniversary of the MLB draft can be found here and our “What Wood You Do” bat feature can be found here.

Inside the #RallyBanana: A Dodger Insider special

Today, we launch a new Dodger Insider feature, which will take select magazine stories and blog posts and display them on a whole new level. For our inaugural effort, click above and let Matthew Mesa take you into the fascinating, living-on-peel’s-edge world of Kiké Hernandez and the Rally Banana.

Dodger Insider magazine — June 2015 edition

June 2015 cover

June sidebar altBy Jon Weisman

Joc Pederson has been embraced by his Dodger teammates as quickly as he has taken the National League by storm.

Pederson, who has a higher OPS at this stage of the campaign than any previous Dodger Rookie of the Year Award winner, is featured on the cover of the June 2015 issue of Dodger Insider magazine, which once again offers more than two dozen stories, plus games and photos galore.

Andre Ethier’s comeback season is also explored in this month’s issue, which includes something truly unique: a special player-behind-the-camera showcase of second baseman Howie Kendrick’s photography.

But wait, there’s more: We also look back at the Dodgers’ 50-year history in the MLB draft with a package that spotlights not only Dodger broadcaster Rick Monday (MLB’s first-ever amateur draft selection) but also the little-known saga of the Dodgers’ inaugural draft pick, Bakersfield High infielder John Wyatt.

The June 2015 Dodger Insider magazine is available at all Dodger team stores. To subscribe, visit dodgers.com/magazine. Orders taken through June 11 will begin with the July issue.

Dodger Insider magazine — May 2015 edition

May 2015 cover image

May highlightsBy Jon Weisman

Adrian Gonzalez is having a great start and has been highly regarded among Major League first baseman for quite some time. But there hasn’t been much focus in the media on where Gonzalez will ultimately rank among the all-time greats.

In the May issue of Dodger Insider magazine, Cary Osborne explores Gonzalez’s potential legacy, highlighted by Gonzalez being on track to become one of the top 25 first basemen of all time.

The cover story is one of more than two dozen features in the latest issue of the blog’s companion publication, which will be on sale at all Dodger Stadium stores beginning Friday. Other top stories are highlighted at right, along with our usual collection of Dodger history, news, notes, photos and more. It’s Dodger past, present and future in one great 152-page package.
